Using the Website

The website contains a representative selection of the Marsden Archive collection. Images are organised by descriptive category name and by location the image was taken. Images are also keyworded. Clicking on each brings up a preview version of the image and also displays additional information about the image such as its keywords.

Images can be browsed using the Library section of the website and a selected in to a lightbox for later review. Lightboxes can also saved and sent out once you've registered with the site and logged in. Once you have a lightbox loaded, you can send an Image Licensing request to the library which will allow us to have a good idea of your usage requirements before we contact you.

Locating Images

Images can be browsed by category or by location. From the 'The Picture Library' section of the site, select an entry for either category or location to begin this process. You can switch how you browse at any time by either returning to the library entry page or using the link from within the library.

The most powerful way of locating images is to use the keyword searching facilities. Search for a single word at a time - you can add extra words to the search as you go. If you are not sure which keywords to use, find an image that fits your requirements using the browse methods above and then, by clicking on the image, use the keyword links of the image preview page to locate more images of a similar nature.

You can also visit the 'find a keyword' and 'show all keywords' pages to get a better idea of the keywords available.

Most of the tools used for searching can be found on the 'Search Tools' toolbox that appears on the right hand side of the page when applicable.

Using the Lightbox

To get the most out of the lightbox, you should register for an account and log in. Without being logged in, you can only add images to a temporary lightbox referred to as your working lightbox - you cannot use any of the other features described below except for ordering prints.

Whilst browsing images, you can add images to your lightbox from the main gallery screen using the lightbox link under each image and from the image preview screen. Once you've found the images you are looking for, visit the lightbox using the link at the top right of the page. From there you can save your lightbox for future reference and create an Image licensing enquiry.

You can also send lightboxes to a colleague or friend and load any of the lightboxes you have previously sent out or saved. It's also possible to order prints of all the images in your lightbox.
